William, i totally agree on hotels. The VAT rate should be split as restaurants do need it, but i believe it would be quite complicated.

Re the 9% vat rate - I'd agree with Jim's comments when it's applied to restaurants - when I was living in Galway last year, I could many businesses in the sector struggling, and a number of great places had to shut their doors for good.

However, re hotels- I'm not sure I'd agree. I'm from killarney originally, and from what I can see, they are making outsized profits, particularly with regard to providing refugee accommodation and vacancy rates are very low. I had a small investment in a hotel that I recently exited and the books looked excellent in the end. Dalatas recent profits could provide some evidence to this point. In contrast to the restaurants, I don't think they should be getting preferential treatment.
