Hi lads. Still loving the podcast. I’ve been too busy to comment for a while but still been listening.

Over time I am becoming increasingly of the view that we are a stupid species who are sowing the seeds of our own demise. Happy weekend everyone!

The discussion on the upcoming budget (if you could call it that, nothing to see here), the lack of action on long term opportunities and threats and the effect of populism and election cycles on our lack of strategic decisions leads me to think that perhaps our lives might be improved by being subjugated to the rule of our future artificially intelligent overlords.

That said, in the meantime perhaps we can figure out why we as a species seem to be okay with being frogs in the gently heating pot. The majority of people you speak to will profess to be supporters of long term strategic decision making! If you did an opinion poll I am sure that would come out. Yet we don’t have any political parties offering this.

But has that been tested? For example, what if a party stuck a load of stuff in their manifesto about using our nest egg of budget surpluses to embark on a number strategic projects? What would the reaction be?

I can hazard a guess. The reaction won’t be against the concept. It would be against their competency to execute such a plan.

Perhaps the solution to that is to do more like what we’ve done with central banks. It’s too complicated and long term to leave with politicians to manage, so set a long term objective, and hand it over to experts. Whatever we think about central bank policies, they are a damn sight better than having the likes of Pearse Doherty set the interest rates.
