Great stuff, Chris. I think the ways in which smartphones and the internet have improved all our lives over the last 20/30 years are hard to perceive for most of us, given how adaptable a species we seem to be. With a bit of luck AI will have an overall massively positive effect, and after a few years will all have forgotten about what we were worrying about.
I’m not very confident that it will have anything insightful to add to certain philosophical debates about consciousness and the nature of reality sadly; as it seems to just mimic/collate and compute, but I’d be happy to be proved wrong on that point.
Thanks Dave. One of the things I’ve learned in past few days is that a lot of people think AI developments won’t affect them and therefore they are utterly uninterested.
Interesting piece Chris, makes one wonder if pivotal moments on the arc of human history were ever appreciated in real time, heard a much darker take midweek, perhaps solutions lie in developmental psychology and not code when these "transformer" learning scaffolds are stacked..
Very comprehensive John, just as I remember your work in our banking days.
So I asked ChatGpt who Chris Johns is and it was glowing of you and your work. I didn't know you wrote a book on cycling! Now you just sold a book via ChatGpt

For the avoidance of doubt, I have rarely cycled and never written a book about it!
That proved ChatGpt integrity so!
John, this is certainly your hobby horse at the moment. Maybe diversify a little...😉
Who John?
