Sinn Féin and People Before Profit, if elected to government, intend to narrow the tax base by removing most homes from the property tax net and then imposing more income tax, wealth taxes and property taxes on higher earners and by imposing more employment taxes on businesses. We know that many people amongst the Irish electorate are caught up in a wave of populism and faux rage, and therefore they intend to vote for a leftist government at the next general election. Should Sinn Féin and People Before Profit take power, probably supported in government by Labour and the Social Democrats, many higher earners and Irish investors will leave this country, multinationals will cut back investment, jobs will be lost and tax yield will suffer. Ireland, with a thriving economy, massive job creation, huge inward migration, already has the most progressive taxation and welfare system and the lowest poverty gap in the OECD but seems ready to elect a nationalist populist force of the far left to govern and upend our successful high growth economic model. I dread it.
Great pod lads. Surely the UK culture wars launched by the Tories are their way to distract people from the damage they have caused? As for Irish politics I'm not sure the State or the other political parties quite understand the fight they are in from a well resourced, focused opposition with a singular goal and a playbook and which will only intensify over the next two years. Have a look at the amount of written questions that are being asked as an example.
Many thanks! Yes, the distractions caused by corrupt politicians do, indeed, distract. I'm sure that's convenient, but not so sure about it being deliberate. This lot are so chaotic, they couldn't run a bath, let alone a successful disinformation campaign. More cock up than conspiracy.
Yes, it does seem that the opposition is more focused and well organised than the Irish government. Governing is a lot harder than opposition. Events can blow even the best governments off course. I think the bet must be that two years is a long time and that something will turn up for FF and FG. Not much of a strategy is it?

I couldn't agree more with your sentiments Mark. It is a scary prospect. Not sure i would want to live in a country with those people in charge.
