Today marks the first anniversary of ‘The Other Hand’. During the past year our podcast has been downloaded over 284,000 times. Our articles posted on Substack site have been read many thousands of times. What began as a bit of fun during lockdown has grown beyond our wildest dreams. A big thank you to all our listeners and readers. And a big shout out to the many of you who engage with us via email, Twitter, LinkedIn and the comments section of our site - the vast bulk of the exchanges have been polite and constructive. Not everyone agrees with us all the time but we always learn when listening and engaging respectfully.
I love how your podcast opinions resonant with my values - I usually start a nice long walk and turn on your podcast. I’m zipping along at a fair pace to your dulcet tones!!
I love the bouts of teasing between each other - add a nice bit of levity at times when most needed👍
Keep it going lads - it’s a wonderful way of sharing your views.
It’s now the podcast I look forward to most! I’d love to hear an in depth look into the Irish personal tax system. The progressive (or not?) nature of it and what effect future government might have on economic growth if there are changes made to it (changes based on the stated policies of parties that may or may not be in government here in the future. I think you might guess which party I have in mind) Thanks and keep up the great work.
Congratulations guys - I always listen to the podcasts and read your blog posts. The technical analysis you provide of the markets, interest rates, bond yields, etc. is very interesting for me. I've commented before a few times. I dare say you've been enlightened yourselves from the feedback provided by your listeners and readers. A few themes I'd like to see you delve more into are the following:
- future of banking - Chris wrote on a blog post: "Cash is disappearing and once Central Banks issue their own digital currencies we will see traditional retail banks disappear." Jim has talked about there being no choice but to rescue the banking system post the GFC in 2008. I just don't see a smooth transition from high street/Wall St banks to CDBCs. Would like to hear you discuss that again.
- on a related topic: cryptocurrencies and Defi.. when you zoom out it's really about centralised noney/finance (high street banks or CDBCs) vs decentralised money/finance.. and that's where the debate is now in finance.. there are pros and cons for both.
- Sinn Fein's rise.. I'm not sure it's right to characterise Sinn Fein as the hard/looney left. The hard/looney left are represented in the Dail by the likes of the SP/PBP. SF are more of a populist/protest vote, in an era of declining FF/FG support, despite over a decade of loose monetary policy! Anyway, if SF go into government in the ROI, they are going to be very constrained in what they can do in terms of fiscal or monetary policy.
- finally it was mentioned by another poster that you appear on The Last Stand. I don't listen to that anymore, but the style of the host of that podcast is not to challenge the guests. While the podcast format is good for in-depth discussion of topics, one must be careful not to appear in an echo chamber. Everyone needs to be challenged - would be good to get more expert guests on your show with more alternative points of view.
Congratulations to you both, really enjoy listening to your podcast, great insights and all delivered in a very accessible and entertaining way. Keep up the great work.
Just discovered The Other Hand recently, though I listened/listen to both of you on The Stand. It's not easy to keep a podcast and newsletter going, let alone for a year, so it's been a great effort and great listen.
Congrats lads great achievement. I always look forward to listening to your podcast it’s always a breath of fresh air.
Topic for future discussion, a deeper dive into crypto? I’m always amazed at how you both dismiss it (I do acknowledge it is extremely volatile). I’m by no means a cryptophile but I can see it playing a big role in our future lives. I’d be interested to know is it a generational thing? Like trying to explain the internet in the early 90s? Especially with the war in Ukraine and the sanctions placed on Russia. Could Russia somehow tap the crypto markets to fund operations? I mean at the end of the day the whole point of DeFi is that no one controls it. If you got a guest speaker on I’d be interested to hear how they address your comments and understandings about crypto. Anyway, food for thought.
All the best lads keep up the great work. I just read you’re both on LinkedIn so I’ll drop ye a follow.
