I thought the changes to the central bank mortgage rules would have featured this week! Why loosen the rules and why now? I think we discussed before what the central bank might do if there were signs of a property slow down. Have they moved to counter a slow down before we even see one begin to emerge?
Is it time to stop measuring currency strength against the dollar? If the euro, pound and the yuan are all weakening against the dollar then surely the common denominator is the dollar and the real story lies there? Is this just interest rate parity with the US having raised interest rates very highly? Also the demand surge from everyone paying more for commodities all traded in dollars?
Good spot - those CB rule changes were worthy of comment. Will rectify in next pod. Don’t know how to answer your last point. Having been in the US and seen just how unbelievably expensive everything is from a € or £ perspective I am sure that the $ is ridiculously over valued. Can you have a currency bubble?
I have family in the states and they share your experience of how expensive it is.
My point on the currency is, every currency is weakening and performing badly if we only compare it to USD. Some similarities to the old trick the left play in ireland where if you want to say something is smaller than in other nations, all you need to do is express it as a percentage of our inflated GDP. I’m glad to see the media focus in the UK shift more towards their bond yields.
BTW I completely agree with the sentiments around Richi Sunak’s social class. It’s shouldn’t matter what his background is.
