Just on the government dip in last week's post budget Business Post poll - the government is up in a poll in today's Dunday Independent and Sinn Fein are down.
Thanks Jamie. Didn't make it to starting line. Difficult disc issues in my lower back at the moment. Old injury that returned with a vengeance over past month.
Guys, love what you cover (top notch stuff!) but Chris I have a bug bear.... You start each episode saying ‘we have loads to get through, no doubt too much’ and then spend ~5 mins outlining the agenda items, sometimes giving your detailed thought before really starting. How about just starting and jumping into each topic (save 5 mins). We really don’t need that intro agenda as we’re already tuned in and ready to listen.
I totally agree, the long intro is tedious. The discussions on the other hand (boom!) are always great . If I was able to do this podcast I would do a 10-15 second intro agenda of the topics . Appreciate it’s your podcast so you can choose to do what you like, but I would respectfully suggest this is one improvement you adopt
Why is it that FG have such a hard time defending their record in office? I watched some old clips of Tony Blair and one thing that stood out is how much he could sell the electorate their achievements in office.
In 2011 Ireland’s tax revenue was something like 37bn, running a 17bn budget deficit. We now have an annual budget of 108bn and are running budget surpluses. The amount we can spend on our services has improved enormously. Yet FG cannot seem to bag themselves any credit for this at all. Housing dominates the narrative and FG allow that to happen.
Narrative is a fancy word for fashion. Or meme. Or a popular idea. Why narratives spread is easy to understand: think viruses. Some more harmful than others. Management of the media is crucial: you must be good at it if you want to be an effective politician. Even then, you need a bit of luck to catch the narrative wave. If that means breaking bread with Murdoch, so be it. If you find that distasteful, don't be a politician. FG has terrible PR handlers. Shinner PR is very, very effective.

Indeed. I guess the real test will come in the poll that matters.
Thanks for the tip. Cheers
Jamie and Alex, point taken. Will adopt a different approach from today onwards. Thanks for very constructive and very sensible feedback.

I think the Government parties got a bounce after last year’s budget up until start of the summer. It would make case for Apil/ May election
Jim, how did DCM go for you this year? Hope it went to plan.
